Household 61 - Dublin Drummond - Contributed by Gail M. Walczyk
Dublin Drummond was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1750. Dublin died before 25 September 1797 (Nottingham; p. 448). He
married Susanna circa 1778 in Accomack Co., VA. Susanna, was born in
Accomack Co., VA circa 1762. She had been emancipated by a Shay
(Accomack Survey 2; p 106).
On 19 October 1793 in Accomack Co., VA Dublin bought land from James Duncan (Accomack Deeds, pp. 58-60). See DEED. The deed in part reads:
.
. . containing Twenty five acres more or less which lands were late the
property of Geo: Gale Esqr of Baltimore and sold by him to James Duncan.
On
8 December 8 1795, the lands of Dublin Drummond were processioned. He
was present for this processioning (Walczyk Processions ; 23) . The
record reads in part:
.
. . James Duncan, Solomon Johnson, Elijah Lucas, Zadock Bayly, Robert
Bayly, Robt Chace, Thomas Fitchett, Willlm Lucas & Dublin Drummond.

Dublin made a will on 1 October 1794 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 25 September 1797 (Nottingham Wills, p. 448). TRANSCRIPTION An abstract of his will reads:
DRUMMOND,
DUBLIN, a Free Negro - 1 Oct. 1794 - 25 Sept. 1797 - To friend Walter
Bayne 10 acres on the North side of the tract purchased of Isaac for
the purpose of paying the said Warner the balance I owe him, and also a
balance due the said Walter Bayne for store dealings. To daughter
Hannah 7 acres adjcent William Lucas & the residue of the lands for
3 years. Should either of my sons obtain their freedom the residue of
my land to be equally divided between them, & in case none of them
get free the residue of my lands to be rented out & the money to be
equally divided between my children that are slaves. Horse to be sold
& the money applied to the payment of a debt due Spencer Drummond
&my other just debts I owe. Friend Walter Bayne Exr. Witt: Colmore
Bayne, Woodman Bloxom, Peter Delastatius.
On
10 October 1794 in Accomack Co., VA the lands of Francis Litchfield
were surveyed. Francis Litchfield lands were bounded by Dublin Drummond
(Accomack Survey 1). See LIITCHFIELD SURVEY
Dublin
Drummond was named in the deed on 30 October 1797 in Accomack Co., VA
in which Walter Bayne from Hannah Drummond (Accomack Deeds; p. 187).
The deed reads in part
.
. . Walter Bayne claims as devisee under the Will of Dublin Drummond
decd dated the 1 day of October 1794 and which was duly proved in the
County Court of Accomack Sept 25th in the Year 1797 . . .
The
lands of Dublin Drummond were again mentioned in a survey taken on 15
November 1798. At the request of Andrew Hoffman (Accomack Survey 2; p.
84). See HOFFMAN SURVEY The survey reads:

15th 1798 - Surveyed at the Request of Andrew Hopman Sixty Six Acres of
land and Divided the Same which land do lie in the Parish and County of
Accomack Near Misungo and bounded as follows (to wit) on the S.E. by
the land of Custis Northam, on the N.E. by Jno Burton late of Geo Gale,
on the N.W. by Walter Bayne late of Doublin (free Negro) and on the
S.W. by the land of Jas Duncan the Plat Courses, Distance &c below
On
12 January 1799 in Accomack Co., VA the lands of Susanna were surveyed
(Accomack Survey 2; p 106). See DRUMMOND SURVEY The survey reads in
part:
.
. . bounded as follows(to wit) On the N.E. by the lands of Geo Bagwill
late of Francis Litchfield, on the N.W. by the lands of William L.
Lucas, on the S.W. by Galloping Ridge Road, and on the S.E. by the land
of the heirs of James Hopman . . .
Susanna
is mentioned in the 1800 Census as Susanna Goliah (Powell Census; p.
17). The entry reads: Accomack Parish page 10, Goliah, Susanah (D.S.)
(Free Negro), 2 free Negroes.
Susanna
is mentioned in the 1810 census as Susannah Goliah (Powell Census; p.
69). The entry reads: Accomack Parish page 97, Goliah, Susannah (Free
Negro) (Slave) 5 others, 1 Slave.
On
13 January 1812 Susanna appears as Susanna Goliah in the procession
taken on that date (Walczyk Processions; p. 147). The procession reads
in part:
. . . Lines between Wm L. Lucas & Susannah Goliah. . . .
William
Lucas was mentioned along with Dublin Drummond in the procession of
1795/96 (Walczyk Processions; p. 23), and mentioned in the survey taken
on 12 January 1799; (Accomack Survey 2; p 106).
On 22 February 1816 The lands of Susanna were processioned. (Walczyk; p. 186). The text in part reads:
.
. . Lines between Jacob Northam & Jno Rew, Geo. Christopher
present. Lines between Wm Northam & Susanna Goliah. Lines between
Wm L. Lucas & Frank Jenkins. . . .
She
wrote her will on 7 February 1825. It was proved on 28 November
1825(Miles & Miles; p. 232). An abstract of her will reads:
All
my estate to Upshur Bayly & at his death to Thomas Bayly the son of
Upshur Bayly. Witt: Bennet M. Bird, George Martin & Zadock Bayly.
Dublin Drummond and Susanna his wife had the following children:

Hannah was born circa 1779. In Dublin Drummond will on 1 October 1794
in Accomack Co., VA, Hannah was named as an heir. It was probated 25
September 1797 (Nottingham Wills p. 448.).
On 30 October 1797 in Accomack Co., VA Walter Bayne from Hannah a Negro Woman (Accomack Deeds; 187). See DEED. The deed in parts reads:
.
. . unto the said Hannah her heirs and assigns a certain Tract of land
lying and Situate in the County afsd bounded North by the lands of
James Hoffman to the West by the land of the said Hannah which land as
aforsd described the said Walter Bayne claims as devisee under the Will
of Dublin Drummond decd dated the 1 day of October 1794 and which was
duly proved in the County Court of Accomack Sept 25th in the Year 1797.
Hannah
was named in the 1800 Census as Hannah Goliah. The test reads: Accomack
Parish page 10, Goliah, Hannah Free negro, 4 free negroes. (Powell; p
17).

George Drummond was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1780. George was
mentioned, but not named in his father, Dublin s will written on 1
October 1794 and proved 25 September 1797 (Nottingham Wills; p. 448).
George was mentioned by name in a survey taken by request of Elijah
Shay for Susanna the widow of Dublin Drummond (Accomack Survey 2; p.
106).

Dublin Drummond had other children not named but mentioned in his will
(Nottingham Wills; p. 448), possibly Esther who married Daniel Allen on
6 April 1808 (Turman; p. 3). The text reads: Daniel Allen free Negro to
Esther Goliah free negro on 6 April 1808 and Robin Goliah , whose
estate was administered by John Burton on 30 November 1809 (Miles &
Miles; p. 232).
NOTE: Whitelaw mentions Gale Swamp in his handling of [A133] ". . . 1793, George Gale sold it all to James
Duncan. The sale reported came to 1, 744 acres . . . Duncan had the
land surveyed, found it to contain 951, and aols most of it as listed
below, the lines for each parcel being run on the survey: kept by
Duncan 118, John Burton, 200, John Burton 80, Jacob Bird 32, John
Litchfield 100, Solomon Boston 50, Bennet Mason 32, Solomon Johnson 167
1/2, Isaac Warner 25, Wm. Lucus 25, James Small 70, Residue 51" (Whitelaw; p. 1213).
