Smith Milliner

Smith Milliner was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1783. He was the son of Smith Milliner [HH26] and Mary. He married twice. He married Jenney Dunton on 8 June 1808 in Northampton County VA (Mihalyka Marriages, p, 73). He married Jane circa 1818. Jane was born circa 1791 (Scherzinger Census, p. 112).

Jane, was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell Census 1840, p. 70). The census reads: Milnor, Jane 1 male 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50, 1 slave. Jane appears in the 1850 Census (Scherzinger Census, 112). An abstract reads: [Jane] Milliner 59, Mariah Milliner 22, Eliza Walker 29, William T. Milliner 6 mos, Ann E. Melson 10, Sarah Melson 17.

Smith was a private in the militia during the War of 1812 in Captain Henry Scarborough's Company of the twenty-seventh Regiment of Virginia Militia, Northampton County

Smith, was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell Census 1800, 1810, 1820, p.141). The census reads: MILLINER, SMITH 1 male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 3 females 0-10, 1 female 26-45, Total slaves 3. Smith, was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell Census 1830 p. 66). The census reads: MILLINER, SMITH 1 male 50-60, 2 females 0-5, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 40-50, 2 slaves.

Smith made a will on 5 December 1829 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 14 October 1831 (Miles & Miles Wills, p. 384). An abstract of his will reads: It was probated. An abstract of his will reads:
MILLINER, SMITH - 5 December 1829 / 14 October 1731 - To wife Jane Milliner during her life of widowhood my whole estate on the condition that she shall raise and support my children Jane, Catherine and Mariah Milliner until they arrive to age 21 and then to my wife Jane Milliner and she shall furnish a home for my 2 children Eliza and Margaret Milliner during their good behavior until their marriage at the house of my wife and no where else. At the death of my wife my whole estate to my living children. Wife Jane Milliner and friend Charles Garret Extrs. Witt: William P. Custis, Edmund Ayres, William Burton, Joseph W. Gibb, Arthur Mears, John Milliner & George West. Prob: John S. Gibb & Samuel U. Fitzgerald securities.
Smith Milliner and Jenney Dunton had the following children:

i Eliza Milliner was born circa 1811 in Accomack Co.,VA. She married James H. Melson on 3 February 1832 (Turman Marriages, p. 199). The text reads: Melson, James H. / Eliza Milliner of Smith - 3 February 1832. John S.Lilliston security. He died circa 1845.

James, was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell Census 1840, p. 68). The census reads: MELSON, JAMES H. 1 male 20-30, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 20-30.

She married Levin Walker on 7 January 1846 at Accomack Co, VA (Turman Marriages, 303). The record reads: Walker, Levin (widower) / Eliza Melson (widow of James) 7 January 1746. He died before 1850.

Eliza was named in the will of her father Smith Milliner dated 5 December 1829. It was proved on 14 October 1731. (Miles & Miles Wills, p. 384).

In the 1850 census as Eliza Walker she was listed in the household of her stepmother Jane Milliner (Scherzinger Census, p. 112). Eliza was listed as the head of a family in the 1860 Census in Accomack Co., VA. (Crowson & Hite, 187). The text reads: Eliza Walker 48 Seamstress, Aneliza Melson 20 Seamstress, Margaret D. Walker 11.

The chidren of James H. Melson and Eliza Milliner were; Ann, and Sarah Melson.

Levin Walker and Eliza Milliner had 1 child; Margaret D. Walker.

ii Margaret Milliner was born circa 1813 in Accomack Co., VA. Margaret was named in the will of her father Smith Milliner dated 5 December 1829. It was proved on 14 October 1731. (Miles & Miles Wills, p. 384).

Smith Milliner and his second wife Jane had the following children:

iii Jane Milliner was born circa 1821 in Accomack Co., VA.

iv Catherine Milliner was born circa 1823. She died on 20 October 1856 (Walczyk Deaths, p, 108). Melson, Cath., W/f, 20 Oct 1856, Acc, childbirth, 33yr c/o Miliner, Smith & Jane, b. Acc, w/o John R. Husband g/info. She married John R. Melson circa 1840. He was born on 14 May 1816 and died on 22 April 1899 (Mihalyka Graven Stones, p. 190). His death was recorded in the local newspaper. It reads: Melson, John R. - Aged; 83 - Father of Levin J. and Wesley T. Melson and Mrs. Robert Scott - PE 29 Apr 1899. SEE: Eastern Shore Death Notices: 1881-1912

John, was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Scherzinger Census, 77). The census reads: MELSON, JOHN farmer 34, Catherine 25, William 8, Levin 3, Margaret 1, Boothe, Edward laborer 30.

John married Catherine Watson on 18 December 1858 (Miles & Miles Marriages, 239). The text reads: MELSON, John R. 42, widower, son of Polly to Catherine Wise 33 widow, daughter of John & Eliza Watson on 19 December 1858 . . .

John, was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Crowson & Hite, 185). The census reads: MELSON, JOHN R. farmer 44, Catherine 35, Levin J. 12, Margaret, 10, Wesley R. 6, John S. Wise 6, John Lilliston 13.

The chidren of Catherine Milliner and John R. Melson were; William, Levin J. Margaret and Wesley.

v. Mairah Milliner was born 1827. She died on 5 November 1892 (Walczyk Deaths, p, 110). The text reads: Milliner, Maria, W/f, 5 Nov 1892, St. Geo. P., unk., 65yr c/o Smith & Jane, b. Acc, lady. Milliner, Wm. Thos., son g/info.

Maria appears in the 1850 Census in the household of her mother. (Scherzinger Census, 112). Maria, was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Crowson & Hite, 185). The census reads: Maria Milliner 30, William Thomas 10, Virginia 10 mos.

The children of Maria Milliner were; William Thomas and Virginia.
